If you’ve been diagnosed with depression or anxiety and have been on one or more antidepressants, you may benefit from genetic testing that has some predictive value in which antidepressants may work best for you, how to best dose the medication based on your medication metabolism, or in which medicines you are more likely to have side effects from. We work with several different genetic testing companies but we predominately use Genesight, which has conducted more trials on their product that other companies with genetic tests on the market. Genesight also includes testing for MTHFR. MTHFR is an enzyme required to convert folic acid and dietary folate into its active form, which is called l-methylfolate. L-methylfolate plays an important role in making neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which help regulate mood. The GeneSight MTHFR test shows whether a person has variation in MTHFR, which would limit their ability to create l-methylfolate.
